Introduction
Mangroves are a vital ecosystem in the tropics throughout their range. The ecosystem services they provide benefit both the health and integrity of the reef and coastlines, as well as the livelihoods of their inhabitants. This ecosystem is under threat in the Mesoamerican Reef, hence the importance of having a regional strategy that contributes to its management, conservation, and restoration.
In September 2019, with the support of the German Embassy in Guatemala and the project “Integrated Ridge-to-Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion (MAR2R)” (CCAD / WWF / GEF), under the coordination of MAR Fund and the Smithsonian Institution, a workshop was held in Guatemala City to develop a regional strategy for the conservation and restoration of mangroves in the Mesoamerican Reef.

Manual for Mangrove Restoration in the MRS and the Wider Caribbean
To contribute to the implementation of the “Regional Strategy for Management, Conservation, Restoration, and Monitoring of Mangroves in the Mesoamerican Reef 2020–2025”, as well as the “Regional Strategy and Action Plan for the Valuation, Protection and/or Restoration of Key Marine Habitats in the Wider Caribbean 2021–2030” of the Cartagena Convention, the Project “Integrated Ridge-to-Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion” (MAR2R/CCAD/WWF-GEF), UNEP-Cartagena Convention, and MAR Fund joined forces, under the Cooperation Agreement signed among the three institutions, to facilitate the preparation of the “Manual for the Ecological Restoration of Mangroves of the MRS and the Wider Caribbean”.
The virtual launch event of the manual took place on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, attended by 159 people including panelists and participants.
Study conducted by Jordan R. Cissell, Department of Geography, Samford University, and Steven W.J. Canty, National Museum of Natural History, Marine and Terrestrial Landscapes, Smithsonian Institution.
We are pleased to share with you the final report of this study funded by the project “Integrated Ridge-to-Reef Management of the Mesoamerican Reef Ecoregion (MAR2R)” (CCAD / WWF / GEF). It is the first time that mangrove ecosystems of the four MRS countries have been mapped using a standardized methodology with high spatial resolution. The study provides: 1) a very detailed and accurate description of the mangrove ecosystems in the MRS for 2020, and 2) a consistent baseline for monitoring future changes in the region’s mangrove ecosystems.
