The Mesoamerican Reef (MAR) is the largest coral reef in the Atlantic Ocean and one of the most biodiverse marine ecosystems on the planet. It stretches along more than 1,000 kilometers, from the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) to the Bay Islands (Honduras), passing through Belize and Guatemala.
This system houses an interconnected network of coastal habitats that support more than 500 species of fish, colorful corals, and endangered species, such as sea turtles and manatees. It is also home to the largest known aggregation of whale sharks.
With its mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs, the MAR is a biodiversity refuge, and a key ecosystem for coastal protection, food security, and the local economy of millions of people in the region.
